La Bodega Gallery presents "6 Degrees of Separation"
A collection of art by España Garcia and Waistknot Wantnot
España Garcia is a freelance artist currently residing in San Diego, California. She received her Bachelors in Art History, Criticism and Curating from UCSD in 2010. She moved to the U.S. at the age of ten with her family from Hermosillo Sonora Mexico. Before receiving her degree from UCSD España took her last two electives in painting. Not knowing her potential as an artist at the time, España's Professor of Art, Ernest Silva, played a large roll in encouraging her to become the artist she is today. Moved by the late professor's words "Our gifts are not for us to keep," España began exposing her art in galleries and group art shows throughout San Diego. It wasn't long before España was commissioned on a regular basis both locally and internationally. Her acrylic paintings done on wood are inspired by street art, realism, surrealism, and the human condition.
Waistknot Wantnot ~ Creating New from Old.
In a world so wasteful, what I am trying to do is take forgotten, neglected, discarded and unloved objects. Essentially trash and scrap. From broken pallets to dental molds, family photos, x-rays, even railroad spikes and reintroduce them as my materials to that same world that deemed them obsolete. Perhaps in functionality, or by the ebbing economy, whatever the case in such a manner so that you see these old objects with new eyes.
Were it may lack in functionality it may compensate in aesthetic. May become beautiful. Maybe enough to be wanted again by that same world. Maybe enough to be coveted, regarded, considered and loved, again.
Sadly, our society is as wasteful as it is. I used it to my advantage. I've never purchased brushes, paints, etc. Not only would I RATHER paint inside of a discarded kitchen drawer forgotten in an alley for years. Opposed to paying for a soulless, uniform, brand new canvas with no character. Manufactured with child labor.
The way I see it... Its not even a matter of choice.
