RENT: "The musical phenomenon of a generation”-- New York Post
SAN DIEGO, CA: One of Broadway's most talked about and iconic musicals, Jonathan Larson’s RENT is coming to the Lyceum Theatre in Horton Plaza. RENT, the Pulitzer Prize and 4-time Tony Award® winning Broadway musical, will be performed at the Lyceum Theatre from December 29, 2012 through January 6, 2013. This full-score, unedited version of the musical is presented by the critically acclaimed and history-making California Youth Conservatory Theatre, a bold and innovative company recently voted San Diego's "Best Theatre Group" on San Diego’s A-List Awards for the second year in a row. Tickets may be purchased from the Lyceum Theatre Box Office at 619-544-1000 or by visiting www.cyctheatre.com with ticket prices ranging from $18-$28.
Based on Puccini's opera, La Boheme, RENT tells the story of one year in the life of friends living the Bohemian life in modern day East Village, New York City, 1989-1990. Among the group are our narrator, nerdy filmmaker Mark Cohen; his former girlfriend, Maureen Johnson; Maureen's Harvard-educated public interest lawyer and lesbian lover, Joanne Jefferson; Mark's roommate, HIV-positive musician and former junkie, Roger Davis; Roger's new girlfriend, the HIV-positive drug addicted exotic dancer, Mimi Marquez; their former roommate, HIV-positive computer genius, Tom Collins; Collins' HIV-positive drag-queen street musician lover Angel; and Benjamin Coffin III, a former member of the group who married for money and has since become their landlord and the opposite of everything they stand for; and the ways their lives change in the 525,600 minutes that make up a year.
Although the production is being presented by California Youth Conservatory, patrons should be aware that this is not the “School Edition” version of RENT, but the full-score, unedited version of the musical. Because of this, it is not recommended for younger viewers.
ADVISORY: RENT contains mature themes, sexual situations and strong language.
