This film reveals the story behind the unusual 18th-century portrait of two young Englishwomen - one white and one black. While viewers of the painting had assumed the black woman was as servant, later research identified her as a cousin of the other women, born of an illegitimate relationship, but raised along with her cousin in the same aristocratic household. Belle gives a fictional account of this woman's life including historical details about the legal work of the great-uncle who fondly raiser her and played a role in the abolition of slavery in England.
