The topic of race has surged back into the national dialogue. Presidential candidates, college students, police departments, and communities across the country are discussing and debating the role race plays in shaping our lives. And it’s for good reason: As San Diego’s population diversifies and as racial inopportunity persists, we must openly examine the effects in our society.
Join The San Diego Foundation, in partnership with the San Diego Museum of Man, and Dr. Charis Kubrin, UC Irvine professor of Criminology, Law & Society and author of Privileged Places: Race, Residence, and the Structure of Opportunity, to learn together about how structural and systemic racism relates to inopportunity. Exhibit tours and a reception will follow.
San Diegans treasure their quality of life in the San Diego region. Yet not all San Diegans have access to the opportunities and quality of life that we value. This is especially true among youth in the child welfare, foster care and juvenile justice system (“system-involved youth”). Given The Foundation’s long history of investing in youth development and education, as well as our network of relationships and partnerships in the community, we are exploring challenges to improve access to opportunities and a better quality of life for system-involved youth.
