The San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus opens the iconic pages of the John Lennon and Paul McCartney songbook for its big summer show, IMAGINE. More than 200 singers and dancers will bring to life the music of the legendary songwriters on July 25 and 26 at the historic Balboa Theatre.
“We’re reinventing this incredible music with an unforgettable choral rock twist that can only come to life when interpreted by our talented singers and dancers,” said Artistic Director RC Haus. “It will be fun, powerful, beautiful and uplifting—all mixed together with the spark of energy and emotion our audiences have come to love.”
SDGMC’s summer extravaganza covers all the Beatles’s smash hits from hard-hitting anthems like “Revolution” and “Get Back” to ballads “Let it Be,” “Hey Jude” and “Yesterday”—in addition to Lennon’s masterfully moving “Imagine.” And in between, we’ll meet our favorite females “Eleanor Rigby,” “Michelle” and “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” who may or may not be members of “Sgt. Pepper’s lonely Hearts Club Band.”
“We always go all out for our big summer concerts, especially this year as we celebrate our 30th Anniversary,” said SDGMC President Bob Lehman. “Nobody does it like we do with a stage packed full of singers, dancers, fun costumes, great production numbers and a little bit of craziness—you name it, we’ve got it!”
Featured once again is SDGMC’s critically acclaimed Chamber Chorale showcasing their masterwork skills on “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” and the multi-talented small ensemble Mood Swings with “You Won’t See Me” and “Martha My Dear.” Also returning will be the San Diego Youth Pride Chorus, San Diego’s only all-inclusive and affirming LGBT and friends youth chorus.
Of special note during this show, the chorus will introduce the inaugural inductees into its SDGMC Hall of Fame honoring singers, directors, donors and others who have contributed to its 30 years of success. Future honorees will be inducted on an annual basis.
Tickets are now available at www.sdgmc.org or by calling the Balboa Theatre at (619) 570-1100. Tickets start at $17 and range to $70 for preferred seating. For an additional $35, ticket buyers may enjoy early entry to attend the one-hour before curtain Director’s Prelude and hear first-hand from Artistic Director RC Haus about the upcoming show. Guests will also receive complimentary hors d’oeuvres and one beverage.
A $4 discount is available for seniors, students, active-duty military and groups of 10 or more. Save ticket fees by purchasing in person at San Diego Theatres Ticketing Services at Third Avenue and B Street across the plaza from the Civic Theatre weekdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Balboa Theatre is located at 868 Fourth Avenue adjacent to the Horton Plaza shopping center in downtown San Diego.
