San Diego Remembers: Matthew Shepard 2014

The 6th annual San Diego Remembers event will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 14 starting at 7 pm. Community members of all ages, backgrounds, and life experiences are invited to this year's march and ceremony, which is themed "Building a bridge from generations of intolerance to a generation of hope." San Diego Remembers began in 2008 when two community members placed a ribbon and candle near the John Robert Wear Hate Crimes Memorial Plaque in Hillcrest to commemorate the 10 years that had passed since Matthew Shepard's horrific murder in 1998. Since then, the San Diego community has gathered each October to reflect, remember, and stand up against hate violence around the world. This year's event is unique because we are placing an emphasis on bridging the gaps between the generations so all can work together for a better future. Tuesday, Oct. 14 7 pm: Community gathering at the John Robert Wear Hate Crimes Memorial Plaque. Following, a candle lit procession alongside University Avenue to the Hillcrest Pride Flag pole for a laying of the Matthew Shepard memorial wreath and then continuing the route towards The Center. 8 pm: Program at the San Diego LGBT Community Center featuring historical information, resources, performances, and presentations by Tracie Jada O'Brien, Fernando Zweifach López Jr, and youth from the HYC Center. 9 pm: All ages post-event celebration at Baja Betty's.
