The Caliph (Closed Permanently)

(35 Ratings)
Accepting everyone since 1960
This friendly piano and karaoke bar attracts a mostly older crowd each night of the week. A nice outdoor patio is a great place to grab a table for a conversation with friends.

Should be shut down

Bad Place and Should be Shut Down Don't even waist you time . This place is in a strip mall type of location. There were only 3 other people in the bar at 10 pm on a Friday. This place should be shut down. They had an old and really old like in their 80s duet singing that sounded like cats that had been run over. We are in our 50's and we thought it all sucked. Head to Hillcrest if you want a good place and don't waist your time at the Caliph!

pass on this one

My husband and I love piano bars so thought we'd check this out while visiting and we couldn't even finish it before leaving. It was full of loud, drunk, straight middle aged women and a few hapless guys they dragged along. I wouldn't have minded but they just kept shreiking at the top of their lungs. the piano player was playing to them too...all "waisting away again in margaritaville music.

I would say this place has not been made over since Sinatra designed it himself. It definately draws the older crowd, so dont be surprised if your the only one checked in here when you go,

Old-fashioned

For better or worse, everything except the exterior paint is old here. From the decor to the customers to the Marilyn Monroe statue above the tiny patio. Piano acts and karaokee with mostly show tunes adds to the nostalgic atmosphere, and most younger patrons are one-half of a May/December relationship. Friday nights are not as busy as they used to be when they got spillover from the massively attended happy hour on the rooftop of the Park Manor Suites across the street (known as "Top Of The Park", now relocated in The Glass Door in Little Italy). Caliph also gets props for remaining opening during the 8-hour power-outage of September 2011, with many guests enjoying candlelit cocktails and sandwiches while listening to the news updates on generator-powered radio while all surrounding businesses were dark!

Nothing But A Good Time!!!

I love this place!!! The drinks were fine and the bar staff seemed to be able to read lips. I say that because it can get a bit loud with the patrons all singing at the same time, but that makes for a fun atmosphere. Nice patio for a more quiet and intimate conversation, too.
