The Hole (Closed Permanently)

(43 Ratings)
"A world famous dive"
Their slogan says it all, and who doesn't love a good dive bar that owns its roots. A tacky tropical patio and Wifi are just part of the allure around here.

It's That Sunday Beer Bust Bar

You know that bar? Mostly guys (bears/cubs, leather, Levi's, hippies, alternatweens), mostly beer -often in disposable cups for a bargain rate, the outdoor patio area is bigger and busier than the darker/smaller indoor area which often has a pool table, restrooms, and all kinds of surprising activity in a back room/porch/area etc. The Hole is what The Eagle in San Francisco used to be (R.I.P.), what The Fault Line in Silverlake still is, and what exists in some form in most Southwestern cities, from Venture-N in Tucson to The Barracks in Palm Springs. It's an incredibly entertaining, loud, horny bunch that only gathers one or two days a week (Sundays at The Hole, with a much sparser, though similarly-minded group on Monday night underwear contests). Five Stars for Sundays (arrive before 3pm or wait in long lines), Two Stars at most all other times.

Great time

My partner and I were in SD in December, found this place by accident. Loved it, friendly bartenders and people.

A Hole...sort of!

Nothing special to look at from the outside, even less prepossessing on the inside, The Hole is nevertheless the kind of joint you hope every city has. It's far off the gay strip, so it is a destination place for its patrons; people come and stay. The Sundays can get quite wild and justifiably infamous--people let their inhibitions down as afternoon gives way to evening. Mondays nights boasts one of the most unusual wet underwear contests you'll likely to see. Ophelia Later--half drag queen (I won't say which half) and half Bob Barker--actually interviews the contestants (who are rarely pretty boys) for a good ten minutes, asking them sometimes acutely uncomfortable questions in their skivvies and often to the delight of the crowd. The drinks are cheap and there is an outdoor patio with fire pit in front for the cool San Diego winter nights. Well worth the trip.
